Although the information you currently have posted is minimal I really enjoyed reading through it. I was born and raised in Washington, but moved away in 1979. I particularly enjoyed the information regarding the railroads. My father’s first employment was with the B&O as a Brakeman then as an Electrician. His father retired from the B&O Railroad Co. /Chessie System after 30+ years of faithful service.
I would like to ask if you could confirm or investigation a story my Grandmother had shared with me many, many years ago as a child regarding the origins of the town name of Washington, IN.
My Grandmother had stated that the area was originally a Relay or Way Station of sorts for either the Pony Express &/or Stage Lines from which the town evolved from. She further indicated that the name of town (settlement) that we know today as Washington (Indiana) was originally called Liverpool.
The change in the town’s name came about from the level of dislike from its local residents of the time. Grandma said they (residents) absolutely hated their area labeled, or regarded as, Liverpool. She indicated the origin for the name “Liverpool”, or what it referenced at the time was considered offensive. Grandma could not recall why the old folks settled on the name of Washington. She thought perhaps it was a reference to our nation’s 1st President, George Washington, making it a more prestigious name.
I would appreciate your findings or comments on this story and look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks for taking the time to hear Grandma’s story.
